O Navio Escola Sagres saíu de Lisboa para uma viagem de onze meses à volta do mundo. A Sagres vai atravessar três Oceanos, visitar vários continentes e participar em dezenas de eventos e representações durante os doze meses desta viagem de circum-navegação, afirmou à agência Lusa o comandante, Proença Mendes. A Sagres desloca-se primeiro para o Brasil, para dar a volta à América do Sul, depois vai subir pela costa do Pacifico das Américas até São Diego, para as comemorações do 10 de Junho junto da Comunidade Portuguesa. O Navio Escola vai navegar posteriormente para Tóquio, para participar nas "celebrações dos 150 anos do tratado de paz, amizade e comercial entre Portugal e o Japão", precisou Proença Mendes.

Dentro de 20 anos, o Oceano Árctico poderá passar os Verões livre de gelo e tornar-se uma nova rota para os navios, anunciou hoje uma equipa de cientistas britânicos, cuja expedição veio confirmar dados de há dois anos. O degelo no topo do planeta já é considerado o sinal mais claro das alterações climáticas.

Uma nova fonte hidrotermal foi descoberta ao largo dos Açores durante uma expedição internacional denominada Bathyluck 2009. Foi baptizada com o nome Seapress, em homenagem ao trabalho de divulgação dos montes submarinos realizado em todo o mundo.

A bióloga Cátia Silva, do Departamento de Oceanografia e Pescas (DOP) da Universidade dos Açores, que também integrou a missão científica, revelou que os investigadores estavam a “mapear o fundo do mar”, junto ao complexo hidrotermal Lucky Strike, a 1700 metros de profundidade, quando descobriram um novo monte submarino, que, até agora, era desconhecido da comunidade científica.

The recent Tara Arctic expedition strongly demonstrated the reality of global warming. What will be the impact of this global warming on life and on human society? The increase in CO2 and its acidifying effects on the oceans are at the heart of the problem. Half of our CO2 production is absorbed by planktonic organisms. They are at the very origin of life, and a major component of the climate engine. Through their photosynthetic activity these microscopic organisms produce as much oxygen as forests. Without oxygen-producing plankton, humans would never have seen the light of day, and without them, we will disappear. Our future is bound to the fate of the microscopic life in the oceans. How will plankton adjust to abrupt changes in the environment? Will the oceans bloom with invasive species or will there be ocean desertification? Tara will embark for 3 years on a unique trip around the world in search of answers to these basic questions. What makes this expedition unique is the multidisciplinary and continuous exploration of the world’s oceans and seas using the same collection and observation methods everywhere. An international team of oceanographers, ecologists, biologists and physicists from prestigious laboratories has been organized for the Tara Oceans expedition.
